Effect of aqueous extract of black maca (Lepidium meyenii) on increased vasodilatation factors in corpus cavernosum and testosterone in blood

Abstract
In an in vitro experiment using human umbilical vein endothelial cell, the concentration of black maca extract increased the generation of nitric oxide (NO). Additionally, the levels of NO, nitric oxide synthase, and cyclic-GMP in the corpus cavernosum of the experimental animals increased significantly as the concentration of black maca extract increased. The levels of dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17¥â-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases in the blood rose with oral administration of the extract, while sex hormone binding globulin levels decreased. Although no difference in sperm count was observed, the group administered with 300 mg/kg black maca extract had a thicker and more abundant spermatogenic layer, sperm head, and sperm mass than the control group. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in safety-related measurements when compared with the control group. These results suggest that black maca may have the potential to be used for the improvement of male menopausal disorder.
